A Unique view of Atila’s latest show being recorded!

This thoughtful and entertaining new show is a fresh look at the life and work of the timeless Nat King Cole.

We all know and love Nat King Cole. His vocal stylings have defined songs such as Nature Boy, Unforgettable and When I fall in Love and have earned him a place in the history of American music. This new show presents all Nat’s famous songs, but with a unique context. We aim to chart his rise to fame – the lesser known, but perhaps more interesting period of his music during the 1930’s and 1940’s.

It was Cole’s hard working Trio that gained him notoriety in America, and it is this group that inspired ‘King for a Day’. The show takes in his early work as a pianist, and follows the great man’s music throughout his life. We learn of the first time he was encouraged to sing. We take in some of the cool, classic arrangements that made the Nat Cole Trio a hit at Capitol Records. We celebrate the huge radio output that established Cole as the leading singer pianist of his time.

Then we entertain our captivated audience with unique versions of Nat’s greatest hits, arranged in the Nat Cole Trio style by Tom Farmer, specifically for Atila to sing. All the well loved songs, delivered with a sincerity often lacking in today’s music.

We also present an album bearing the same name. Our aim was to capture the feeling of Nat’s early trio recordings, and we achieve this in recreating his recording process. We performed live, all in one studio room, gathered round one 1940’s Coles Microphone. The result is a brilliant feel that can only be captured in this way. Real musicians and real music.

For those of you not fortunate enough to have heard Atila sing, he is among the top jazz singers in the country. From being the featured singer with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, to touring with the great Buddy Greco, Atila has been heard on BBC Radio 2 and on the ITV’s Alan Titchmarsh show.

Alongside Atila we feature the UKs best jazz musicians; At the Piano is Gabriel Latchin, who is a regular performer at Ronne Scott’s. Colin Oxley, guitarist with Stacey Kent and the John Wilson Orchestra, is one of the most sought after talents. Augmenting the trio is internationally recognised drummer Steve Brown. Steve has played with many of the great Jazz artists, including Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison (who recorded with Nat King Cole!), Conte Candoli and Benny Golson. At the bass is Tom Farmer, who also directs the show, an in demand bass player appearing with Empirical, Joe Stilgoe and James Torme.

‘King for a Day’ is touring near you soon!
